For the crowd simulation work, our team developed a proprietary in-house solution capable of accurately replicating thousands of individuals in a large-scale environment such as a stadium. This process began with a detailed digital reconstruction of the environment, ensuring precise placement and realistic behavior of the crowd. Maintaining world-scale accuracy was crucial because the human eye can easily detect inconsistencies in proportion or motion. One of the major technical challenges was managing the immense data load, as each digital human required unique textures and animation details. To streamline this, we engineered a set of custom pipeline tools to optimize data management, reduce render times, and enhance efficiency across departments.

Our compositing team also played a key role in achieving believable crowd density. For close-up shots, multiple plates of extras were filmed and strategically repositioned in the stadium seats. These were later stitched together in compositing to transform a group of 50 people into a crowd of 300. For the wide shots, our 3D team built and animated digital models of the spectators, stadium structures, and flags, creating the vibrant, energetic atmosphere that defines a Springbok match.
