Robot and Scarecrow Short Film

Robot & Scarecrow Short Film

DMC Film | Factory Fifteen | Nexus Studio

Set amidst the euphoric madness of a summer music festival, Robot & Scarecrow is a uniquely modern fairytale about love. When a robot pop princess flees her keeper she runs straight into the arms of a lonely scarecrow desperate for adventure. They spend an incredible night together, caught in a heady vortex of music and magic.

The short film, directed by visionary South London director Kibwe Tavares, and with executive producer Michael Fassbender, comprised over a 140 visual effects shots, of which Chocolate Tribe delivered 127. All shots contained either the fully the CGI robot, scarecrow or both. The project was a first for South Africa, due the scale of the VFX production. The project took 8 months to complete from initial concepts to final composites. Due to the large number of highly complex shots requiring a lot of VFX work, we opted for a top down approach, to allow the director to get a feel for the overall film as soon as possible. Shots were matchmoved and animated in quick succession to form a full edit as soon as possible. The shots were then revised multiple times as it progressed through the different stages of the production. Since the whole film was captured at a festival (Secret Garden Party in the UK), Chocolate Tribe often didn’t have any clean plates to work with, and had to therefore repaint and reconstruct large parts of the plates for most of the shots. The matchmoving of the 2 lead characters took several months to complete.

Body movements and facial expressions were carefully matched to the actor’s performances, as it was Kibwe’s intention to use the live action performance as a guide for the CGI characters. The stage performance, used motion captured data recorded at the London based, Imaginarium Studios (part owned by Andy Serkis). Certain shots in the film were completely CGI. So not just the characters, but the background as well were generated in post, and blended seamlessly with the other shots. Chocolate Tribe, after doing various tests on other rendering solutions, choose to work extensively with Redshift for Maya on Robot & Scarecrow. From a production management point of view. Our in-house pipeline tools enabled artists to focus on the project, and kept all departments working seamlessly. Our high speed fibre internet worked it’s magic and supplied our client the data in the UK within minutes. This project yet again, showed that, no matter where the client is located, with the right approach, productions will flow very smoothly. Robot & Scarecrow has been made with the support of Vero – the social network that is nurturing the next generation of artists, filmmakers and musicians and providing them with new possibilities for people to connect with their work online. We congratulate DMC film, Kibwe Tavares and Nexus Studio on a successful project completion and entry to the Sundance film festival and London Film Festival in London.

The Kid Who Would Be King

Kid Who Would Be King

Glassworks

Old school magic meets the modern world in this epic adventure. Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he’s just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical sword in the stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Sir Patrick Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson).

With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be. Chocolate Tribe was approached by our colleagues from Glassworks to work with them on the character rigging and animation for various shots of the animated opening sequence to the film. The mixed use of 2D and 3D in the sequence is looking stunning.

Lexus Hybrid "Out of this World"

M&C Saatchi Abel

Lexus "Out of this World"

The Lexus team at M&C Saatchi Abel approached Chocolate Tribe for an amazing surreal ad briefing which turns conventions on their head. Lexus “Out Of This World” takes the viewer on a journey through a fantastical world build out of Dali’esque type landscapes and structures.

The Chocolate Tribe both directed and created the ad together with a team of about 15 CGI artists. It’s a story of old vs new, pushing the idea of what the future can hold with a car that is powered by a hybrid engine. Shining a spotlight on the tension that exists between these opposites, positioning Lexus Hybrid as a car that brings together the power of two worlds to create something even better.

From the very beginning Chocolate Tribe built a solid foundation for the look and feel by creating countless concept artworks to represent the different worlds in the ad, which in turn represented the different aspects of the Lexus Hybrid.

The world created is so diverse, it would not have been possible any other way, but through the use of CGI.

A long list of mind boggling and challenging aspects from a mechanical dinosaur constructed of old car and machinery parts, a fantasy jackal in a lush green dense forest, a giant out of water fish, electrical plugs, power chargers, massive light bulbs floating over landscapes and floating cities brought together all the aspects of the car and set the ad apart from the mainstream ads in such a way, that you could not miss it. It was “Out of this World”.

The ad is fully created on the computer using tools such as Maya, Redshift, Nuke and Substance Painter. Every asset was modelled, textured, rigged, animated and rendered in 3D. The commercial maintains a surreal look and feel, which further heightened the experience.

Savanna Jean: Birds

In the fight against over garnished Gin drinks, Savanna decided to bring out their offer to combat the frou-frou of craft Gin. Savanna Jean.

The cute little Cape White Eye birds are drawn to our gin drinker’s garnish on his oversized glass, which he soon regrets ordering. Shot in a pre-Covid world, Greg Gray and Helena Woodfine from Romance films approached Chocolate Tribe to create all the CGI birds in post.

Our VFX Supervisor, Rob van den Bragt was on-set to guide the shoot for all the VFX requirements and in just 6 weeks from shoot, we modelled, textured, rigged, animated and composited in the hungry, playful birds. Well done to everyone for bringing these cheeky little birds to life and delivering a very humorous and fun filled advert.
