iNumber Number "Jozi Gold"

iNumber Number: Jozi Gold

Netflix

Chocolate Tribe is thrilled to share an exciting project we worked on with Quizzical, and directed by Donovan Marsh, that has kept us buzzing with anticipation.

The feature film sequel “iNumber Number: Jozi Gold.” revolves around two friends, Shoes (Presley Chweneyagae) and Chili (S’dumo Mtshali), who bravely confront crime in the bustling city of Johannesburg as they pursue a notorious gold kingpin known as the Hyena Man.

Chocolate Tribe was brought on board to bring to life the character of Jonga, the Hyena Man’s trusted partner. A domesticated, ferocious, and intelligent hyena.

Chocolate Tribe turned to Autodesk’s Maya, Ziva muscle simulation toolset (from Unity), Peregrine Labs’ Yeti for some amazing hair sims, the robust Autodesk Arnold renderer for some amazing photorealistic rendering, Houdini for the various simulations on the chains and saliva, Substance Painter for texturing and Zbrush for sculpting. Naturally finished off with The Foundry’s Nuke for some final integrations.

The project took the studio about 8 months, requiring extensive research and study of hyenas to accurately depict their movement, gait, growl, and the nuances of their fur, as well as focusing our CGI creation on the accurate species of hyena for the film. When it comes to CGI creature creation, even the smallest gestures and behaviors unique to the creature cannot be overlooked, as they contribute to the character’s authenticity and believability.

From meticulously sculpting the muscular structure to refining the facial features and motion of the body and hair, all our Tribe team members played an amazing role in bringing this remarkable character to life. A heartfelt thank you to all involved from the Chocolate Tribe.

iNumber Number is now streaming on Netflix.

Kizazi Moto "Surf Sangoma"

Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire - "Surf Sangoma"

Disney+

Chocolate Tribe is thrilled to have been part of this ambitious Disney project produced by Triggerfish under the helm of Peter Ramsey.  The sci-fi anthology presents 10 futuristic storylines centered around Afrofuturism. From the onset what this anthology showcases above all, is the immense treasure of African talent and untapped stories.

As part of the Disney anthology, Chocolate Tribe worked on the “Surf Sangoma” short film from the beginning of pre-production to the early stages of production. The project for Chocolate Tribe was an 8-month labour of love with a carefully hand-picked Chocolate Tribe crew of 45 local and international team members.

The film, directed by Nthato Mokgata and Catherine Green, is set in a post-apocalyptic Durban, where the entire city is under continuous threat by monster waves that only seasoned surfers can conquer. Two friends, Njabulo and Mnqobi, while yearning to surf in the ocean, have resorted to surfing the artificial wave pool called Wavy World. This story is about friendship, family, guilt, and Njabulo’s admiration for his late grandmother who was a surfing legend.

Creatively, Chocolate Tribe’s involvement commenced from pre-production – taking the directors’ vision from a draft script to fully blocked-out 3D camera, character blocking and water animation. We went on an amazing journey developing the look and feel of the film, concept art, world building, story development, detailed storyboards, 2D animatics, full cast character designs, 3D modeling, texturing & shading, character rigging and lighting & rendering. We meticulously blocked out all surfing and fight action scenes and lovingly crafted the emotional scenes.

In relation to the technical aspects of the production, Chocolate Tribe developed an extensive USD (Universal Scene Description) pipeline to facilitate the use of Unreal Engine workflow together with Maya, which the studio uses as their main DCC for the modeling, animation, and layout.

More than 400 assets were created by our team including characters, props, and vehicles that were modeled. Custom character rigs were built to support the animation team animating the octopus tentacles.

The ocean played a massive role in the film, and animating the stylised 3D water required a lengthy RnD to capture the water motion in an “artist-controllable” way. The water rig in essence allowed the animators to treat the waves like a character in the film.

World building in Surf Sangoma was a massive undertaking, as the story explored 5 major areas. The ocean surface, the underwater world, the dam megastructure, a swimming paradise called Wavy World, and the futuristic streets. Eduardo Pena, the art director and lead concept artist brought that “je ne sais quoi” magic to the world of Surf Sangoma.

Momentous projects, such as this Disney anthology, require strong teams. From a production side, Chocolate Tribe, from early on, sought out both local and international talent to cultivate collaboration and cross-pollination of skills. The Chocolate Tribe team included storyboarders, character design artists, 3D artists, technical and character animators and technical directors, art directors, concept artists, modeling and texturing artists, lookdev artists, CG and Creative Supervisors as well as a robust production team, and key support staff such as IT, HR, legal, and accounting.

Congratulations to all the studios involved in Surf Sangoma (Motif, Windmill Lane), as well as this hugely impactful animation short film anthology. It is a huge win for the African narrative and creatives who worked on this trailblazing project. We look forward to more of these projects that encourage genuine collaboration and authentic African storytelling.

Measures of Men

Measures of Men

Der Vermessene Mensch

“Measures of Men” (German: “Der Vermessene Mensch“) is a powerful drama film directed by Lars Kraume and released in 2023. The film tells the story of the Herero and Namaqua genocide, which occurred in German South West Africa (now Namibia) between 1904 and 1908. Leonard Scheicher delivers a stunning performance as the ethnologist who uncovers the brutal truth about the atrocities committed against the indigenous people.

Although a painful story, Chocolate Tribe is thrilled to work on these poignant narratives that allow us to reckon with the past and not sweep it under the carpet. Our team handled the On-Set VFX Supervision and VFX in post, spending two months on location in Swakopmund, Namibia

Period dramas such as “Measures of Men” require authenticity and a true replication of the past, so that the audience journeys into an immersive experience that locates them in that era. For this reason VFX plays an important role to teleport the viewer into that time and place.

“Measures of Men” premiered to critical acclaim at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival on February 22, 2023, and was released in cinemas on March 23, 2023. It is a must-see for anyone interested in powerful and thought-provoking films. Chocolate Tribe delivered over 40 VFX shots for the film, including set extensions, clean-ups, and digital matte painting to capture the era that the film was set in.

99c and Bioscope Films with director Rio Allen approached us to animate, composite and grade this fun “Little Checkers” commercial.

Now, who wouldn’t want to animate a world made of Lego type blocks? We are no stranger to Lego animation, and of course are always up for another one.

Fastrack "Nature Wear Spectacles"

Fastrack

Nature Wear Spectacles

Photorealism, creature work, and Chocolate Tribe. A match made in heaven. We were thrilled to be approached by Fastrack, an Indian fashion accessory retail brand, to create a fully CGI orangutan for their latest fashion eyewear commercial. We created an orangutan before, and were happy to try and improve on what we learned during the production of the Checkers commercial.

The creative team worked in Autodesk Maya for animation, Arnold for lighting and rendering, Yeti for the fur system and Ziva from Unity for the model, muscle and movement simulation.

Ziva as a tool allows the full reproduction of realistic muscle, fat and skin slide simulations. It can create an accurate simulation of the underlying skeletal structure and also manipulates the behavior of soft tissue and tendons. A vital ingredient to getting that photorealistic weight, look and feel.

Yeti was amazing to work with on the orangutan’s hair and fur. It was important to get the details right, and with Yeti’s node based workflow, gave the team an amazing amount of control over the dynamics, hair flow, length, density, color and texture of hair and fur.

From an animation point of view, The Tribe spent a lot of time to find a balance between creature and character animation. Although the client was keen to make it look as realistic as possible, they were also aware that the performance of the orangutan needed to connect with the viewer in less than 12 seconds. We filmed performance reference plates during the shoot with an actor, and experimented with a lot of different performance animation options to find the right level of expression.

Disturbed "Bad Man"

Disturbed

"Bad Man"

Our compositing and production teams were so thrilled to be part of this amazing body of work. It was incredible to collaborate on the Bad Man music video, for the band Disturbed with Director Tristan Holmes and Production company Doomsday Entertainment. A project that was so fascinating and cutting edge using a new age mode of creating striking visuals.

The entire music video was done using the Mid Journey Software to create AI Generated Art. Tristan created this video over a period of a month using 10 000 frames on the AI software to generate the imagery. The music video was compiled using image frames and animation to support the movement and the artistic distortion in the music video. Chocolate Tribe compositors worked on the final touches and finishing.
