In the latest Nedbank ad, Greg Gray from Romance Films pulls extra hard on your heartstrings. The commercial creates a dreamlike memory effect, blurring the lines between reality and the protagonist’s fabricated experience. Memories are rarely perfect representations, so the team employed a combination of in-camera techniques and post-production effects to achieve this goal.
Various VFX techniques were utilised to capture the mood and deliver the project. Scenes were shot at two distinct frame rates (6 fps and 25 fps). The 25 fps footage underwent post-processing to mimic the choppier aesthetic of the 6 fps sections, creating a sense of fragmented memory. A special flare look was created and applied to these. Specific shots required the addition of missing elements, such as buildings and a night time cityscape.
A wide concert shot necessitated crowd duplication techniques to enhance the feeling of a large audience. In some scenes, lights were digitally added to compensate for limitations caused by load shedding during filming. Certain edits required the removal of the protagonist from existing footage. In other instances, the VFX team replaced the protagonist in alternative takes where they weren’t initially present. This subtle yet vital VFX work transformed director, Greg Gray, and DOP, Adam Bentel’s stunning cinematography into a visually mesmerizing representation of memory.
The edit shared here is well worth watching. More than anything, for the message which will linger with you forever.
